Spiritual Direction

In addition to pastoring a local church, I am currently working on my Doctor of Ministry with a certification in Spiritual Direction through Fuller Theological Seminary. Part of that process involves seeing clients as a “student director” (I have received training, but am under the supervision of professors at Fuller). If you are new to the idea of spiritual direction, I encourage you to read my description below. If you would like to have a conversation about spiritual direction and seeing if working with me might be a good fit, please fill out the form at the bottom of the page.

Spiritual Direction

Spiritual direction is the practice of holy listening. It invites participants to journey beneath the surface of the curated life to reconcile with one’s true and sacred self. A spiritual director creates space to attend to the presence, action, and invitations of God in the midst of everyday life, with the goal of authentic prayer and personal wholeness. The time spent between a director and directee does not follow a set formula or guarantee specific outcomes. In fact, the very term “spiritual director” can be misleading in that the true director is the Spirit of God.

In our sessions, my goal is to create a space where you can listen for the voice of God speaking in your life, often through times of silence and guided meditation. I will commit to listen with you and try to help you notice what God may be saying and doing in your life. Spiritual direction should not be confused with counseling or therapy. A person might go to therapy in order to fix or treat something — anxiety, depression, OCD, or some other formal diagnosis. Therapy may also seek healing from broken relationships, past trauma, or seek to change behaviors that hinder growth. As the name implies, spiritual direction focuses on the directee’s relationship with God and seeks to help attune one’s heart to the voice of the Spirit that is already speaking and guiding.

I typically meet with directees on a monthly basis for about an hour. Because I am still a “student director,” there is no charge for these sessions.
